When we construct a new house or renovate our homes, we need to give special attention to the flooring materials that we use. Flooring is a very important aspect of our homes as it is by and large one of the most visible feature of our homes. We need to ensure that the flooring material we choose is consistent with the overall layout and furnishings of the house interiors. We also need to make sure that the chosen flooring material is durable, keeping in mind the different intensities of stress that the floors in the various parts of the house are subjected to. One flooring type that meets such demands is slate flooring.

Slate is made up of clay and silt particles bonded together under very high temperature and pressure, and appears flat and very smooth. Slate flooring, alike other kinds of stone flooring, is inherently very strong and lasts for many years. In addition, the bonding process of slate forms a surface that makes slate flooring more resistant to most stains and spills than the other stone floors. However, there are certain foods that can stain your slate flooring. In order to avoid such staining, you can use a kind of a sealer that will pass into the slate and prevent other liquids from creeping into the slate. When you use such a sealer, the slate flooring appears freshly polished.

The other advantage of slate flooring is that it is less slippery than most other types of stone floors as well. The slip resistant quality of slate is attributed to its naturally rough surface. The slate flooring has naturally occurring narrow indentations that bring a distinct look to your floor. In case you want to give a softer and smoother appearance and finish to your slate flooring, you can either hone or sand the flooring.

Slate by nature is composed of several minerals and impurities. This lends the slate and thereby slate flooring an assortment of colors, including dark charcoal black, rust red, maroon, green and grey, that you can select from. You can also choose mottled slate that has a mix of all these colors.

Moreover, slate flooring comes in a variety of natural textures, shapes and sizes. You have the option of mixing and matching the differently sized and shaped various slate tiles to form a floor or part of a floor that has a random design.

With such attractive features, slate flooring must form one of the leading options when you decide on new stone flooring for your home.
